Temperature and humidity play critical roles in how well exterior paint adheres and cures. We monitor weather forecasts closely and will reschedule work rather than risk applying paint in conditions that could compromise the finish. Most exterior latex paints require temperatures between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity below 70 percent for proper film formation. We also account for surface temperature, which can be significantly higher than air temperature on sun-exposed walls during summer months.

We always test large color samples directly on your exterior walls so you can see how the colors look in different lighting conditions throughout the day, because a color that looks perfect under showroom fluorescent lights can appear dramatically different in natural sunlight.

The Exterior Painting Process Step by Step

Our exterior painting process follows a proven sequence that ensures long-lasting results. First, we pressure wash all surfaces to remove dirt, mildew, chalking paint, and cobwebs. Next, we scrape and sand any peeling or flaking areas down to a solid substrate. We then caulk all gaps around windows, doors, and trim joints to create a weathertight seal. Any rotted wood is replaced or consolidated with epoxy filler before priming.

After preparation is complete, we mask off windows, light fixtures, house numbers, and any surfaces not being painted. We apply a full coat of primer to all bare wood, patched areas, and any surfaces where the existing paint has worn thin. Two full topcoats of premium exterior paint are applied by brush, roller, or airless sprayer depending on the surface.
